Host a MEANINGFUL Event
Note the emphasis upon the word “meaningful”.
While hosting an event does have an instant effect of setting you up as a person of relevance, the amount of interest in that event supports or draws away from that relevance.
For instance: if I were to host a seminar on the use of “arbitrage-free pricing for a derivatives contract ”, and the event was for business owners in my community, I would instantly establish myself as an expert in esoteric trivia for techno-nerds but would hardly impress many local business owners.
However, if:
Derf (ADT Security) was to host an after-hours meet-and-greet inviting the local leadership of PTA and Chamber of Commerce to provide tips on how to protect school property from vandalism,
or if Elliot (personal injury law) and David (insurance) held a breakfast meeting for small business owners on the importance and types of business insurance,
or Nina (interior decorator), Rachel (real estate), and Steve (PNC Bank) hosted a seminar on how to prepare a home for resale and how a homeowner could finance that process with a personal loan,
any one of those events would by meaningful to a number of local business and home owners.
